Ten Hag says competition in the squad is crucial as he prepares to welcome fourth signing of the summer

Erik ten Hag is preparing to welcome his fourth signing of the summer to Carrington.

Dean Henderson’s exit to Crystal Palace could be completed by Monday, as he is undergoing his medical at Selhurst Park today (Sunday). Manchester United will receive £15 million up-front from the deal plus a further £5m later down the line in add-ons.

The Englishman’s departure would then pave the way for Altay Bayindir to join the Red Devils from Fenerbache for €7m. He has been sought as a suitable option to play backup to Andre Onana while Tom Heaton recovers from his calf injury.

After the goalkeeper conundrum is resolved, Ten Hag will then likely turn his attention back to his midfield for the remaining week of the transfer window. Sofyan Amrabat is seemingly the most likely addition, though United are yet to make a formal approach or submit a bid.

As we approach the September 1 deadline, the manager has reiterated the need for competition across the pitch and addressed Henderson’s looming exit.

Ten Hag says competition is key

He told Manchester Evening News: “If that’s the case [Henderson moves to Palace], we will bring the news. We are prepared well, we are fully in control. If there are transfers then we need to keep the squad competitive because it is a tough season with many games to cover and so in many positions, you need double [the players].

“In the goalkeeping position,” he continued. “You need three really good ‘keepers who all can keep the Premier League standard, so we will cover that.”
